Fish Tape
This tool is used to guide or route wire through hollow walls and conduits. A plastic reel is used to store the tape, which is usually made from steel, but also made of other durable materials occasionally. The tape is stiff, but flexible enough to manipulate through confined spaces. At the end of the tape, there is usually some sort of hook or other apparatus to hold onto a guide string which creates the path for wires to follow.

Gloves
A good pair of gloves is essential for protecting an electrician’s hands from both physical and electrical dangers. Most electricians carry a few different types of gloves in their toolkit, to fit the job they’re doing at any given time. For safe work where voltage isn’t a danger, it’s still important to keep hands safe from sharp metal edges, which are commonly encountered. Warm gloves are important when working outdoors in the winter, to maintain dexterity and to prevent frostbite. For working on live circuits or when there might be potential voltage hazards, there are insulated gloves available in many different levels of protection. For very high-voltage applications, the gloves are quite thick and go up the forearms. In such situations, a full-body suit and eye protection would probably be used as well.

Boots
Like gloves, a good pair of boots serves multiple purposes. Most construction sites will require you to wear steel-toed boots so that you don’t get your toes crushed by falling objects. When working with electricity, a good pair of insulated boots can help protect you as well. They have non-conductive soles and heels to minimize any electrical hazards that might be present on the ground. These are just some of the tools electricians use most commonly, but they also use more general tools such as hammers, screwdrivers and measuring tapes. Using the correct tool for the job is an important part of being an electrician, and it helps to keep them safe on a daily basis.

Copper Drainage Systems and Using a Snake to Clear the Main Line

Copper drainage systems are usually not much trouble. The copper provides many years of good service, and it is not normally a contributor to stoppages. In fact, in 20 years, I can’t recall a time when a copper DWV system caused any problems. Oh sure, they get stopped up, but all drains can. In general, copper is a good above-ground drainage material that is very dependable.

After you get the clean-out open, you can push a snake into the line. Follow these instructions:

1. Push the snake into the cleanout and push it down into the pipe as far as it will go.
2. When you reach the clog, keep turning the snake, working it back and forth to loosen the clog. When you feel resistance, you know that you’ve reached the clog.
3. Run some water through the pipe from a nearby sink.
If the water doesn’t back up from the cleanout, the clog has been cleared.
4. Replace the clean-out plug and run hot water into the pipe for several minutes.
When you flush the toilet, everything should run okay.
